David started learning the Piano at the ripe old age of four. Classically taught he won awards along the way, and reached Grade 7 while also passing his O and A level in music. Using these skills, David has played piano for numerous amateur shows, and written songs for some, through the years. From 18 to his early 30's, David also appeared on stage in many roles and disguises. He also writes his own songs, a few of which Nightshift perform, and has collaborated with both the bands Steve’s on numerous occasions.
He was 14 when he bought his first electric guitar, (2nd hand) from the Trading Post in Woolwich, for the princely sum of £18.00, after selling a load of his toys, as his Mum and Dad thought it would be a passing phase. Little did they know.
Three months, and quite a few blisters later, he was in his first band and has been in bands ever since. (with few breaks) Playing Lead, Rhythm and Bass guitars as well as singing. Being self-taught on guitar, his advice to any aspiring guitarists is, get some real lessons. "The self taught way, sounds better, but has limitations and is far more time consuming."
He joined Nightshift ten years ago, in which he plays bass and sings. He has enjoyed the way the band has evolved and developed over time and is proud to say that he is in one of the best cover bands in their market place. The diversity of their song list being another reason. "There are numerous songs on our playlist, that I never wanted or thought I would ever play, that once we have learnt, I have enjoyed playing time and time again." He also feels lucky to have found such a talented bunch of musicians, that he can also call friends.
Despite the diverse spectrum of music David has played, sung, listened to and enjoyed, his main love has always been rock music "You can’t beat a live Rock band."
Although happy with his lot musically, David does have one wish, and its not to be on Top of the Pops. "I wish that I/we (my fellow band members), were able to give up the daily grind and concentrate on writing and performing more. Given the conclusion of our "Part Time" efforts, I think the results of full time musicianship and composition would be very productive and extremely exciting." |
