John Leigh - Guitar
John has played guitar with NightShift since 1992 - one of his first gigs was at his own wedding reception!
Although largely self-taught (like, it would seem, most guitar players) John's music career began to take shape back in the 'eighties when he attended folk and classical classes, learning many excellent songs by the likes of Simon and Garfunkel, Leonard Cohen, Gordon Lightfoot, as well as learning to read a bit (of music!). He was also introduced to jazz chord shapes for the first time, and has never been the same since.
His first experience of facing a paying audience was when playing bass for the Abbey Wood Concert Group band. The next production at Abbey Wood saw John on stage for the first time - the first song was probably "Take Me Home Country Roads" by John Denver. Happily, that was the start and end of John Leigh's Country and Western career! (Though it must be said that JD's then went on from strength to strength!).
Encouraged by the sell-out crowds and smell of the greasepaint, John then produced an epic show at Abbey Wood in the spring of 1989, which is still talked of fondly to this day as "…that epic show that John put on at Abbey Wood in 1989, er.., springtime, wasn't it?". Using excerpts from the classic West Side Story, and the Singing Detective tv drama, (humourously re-titled Swinging Defective), the cast threw themselves behind John as the frontiers of local Am-Dram were pushed back. Elvis Presley and Roy Orbison were also present, delivered in the shape of Ken, the handyman from the cornershop. John would like to take this opportunity of thanking the whole cast for their undying love and support, and hopes that they are all now fully recovered.
Godspell! This underrated reverential rocker sees John wield his axe for the first time in 1990. The Fender Stratocaster used for the show at Welling is still used by John today with the band. This show spookily brought together John, David and Stevie some 15 months before joining up together again in NightShift.
Finally, John would like to share some insights into his musical influences :
